Azzi, a Lebanese-American, was based in Beirut, where he was a member of Magnum, a contributor to National Geographic, Time and Newsweek and later photographer of several coffee-table books on Saudi Arabia. In 1996, he became the subject of an Aramco World article when he put down his cameras during the war in Bosnia to found an international rescue effort that allowed dozens of Bosnian high-school students to continue their educations in the US, thanks to the hospitality of families and school administrators across the country.
